Travelling to Sermilik Station
Reaching Sermilik Station typically involves flights to Kulusuk, followed by local transfers (also see costs). Here’s what you need to know:
Flights to Kulusuk
Air Greenland and Icelandair offer regular flights to Kulusuk International Airport. Air Greenland, as Greenland’s national airline, provides both international and domestic connections, but you will usually need to fly to Nuuk, the capital on the West Coast, before
continuing to Kulusuk. Icelandair offers direct flights from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Kulusuk. Booking of favourable flight tickets is recommended at least half a year in advance.
Connecting to Tasiilaq
From Kulusuk, Air Greenland provides regular helicopter transfers to Tasiilaq, a flight of approximately 10 minutes. We strongly recommend to plan for extra time between connections due to potential flight delays.
Keep in mind Air Greenland’s baggage weight concept: While you can bring any amount of checked baggage, you’ll be charged at check-in if the total weight exceeds airline limits (typically 20kg for checked baggage and 8kg for cabin luggage in economy class).
Alternatively, Tasiilaq can also be reached by boat from Kulusuk in about an hour, provided sea ice conditions are favorable.
From Tasiilaq to Sermilik Station
During the summer months, the best way to reach Sermilik Station from Tasiilaq is by boat or helicopter. Refer to our “Costs and Logistics” section for further information.
Important Travel Considerations
- Arctic Weather Impacts: Be aware that flight connections in Greenland are heavily influenced by Arctic weather. Cancellations and delays are much more frequent here compared to other parts of the world.
- Customs Regulations and Equipment Shipping: Familiarize yourself with Greenland’s customs regulations, especially if you plan to transport battery packs or other specialized equipment. You can also ship your equipment via Royal Arctic Lines to Tasiilaq, and we can assist with handling your shipment before your arrival.
